Lucas makes and decorates Turkey-Shaped Cupcakes

using the instructions from the book,"What's New Cupcake?" by Karen Tack & Alan Richardson

Step 1: Gather ingredients
 Iingredients:
1 box Cupcake mix
3 Eggs
1/3 Cup Oil
2 Cans White Icing
72 Caramels
Corn Flakes
Grape-nuts
Pretzel Stix 
Cupcake Cups
Yellow and blue food coloring
1 Tablespoon Green Nonpareils

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350°.

Step 2: Place cups in cupcake tray.

Step 3: Pour cupcake mix in a bowl.

Step 4: Measure 1 cup of water.

Step 5: Add oil to water.

Step 6: Add eggs.

Step 7: Add liquid ingredients to dry mix.

Step 8: Mix on medium speed.

Step 9: Scrape batter off of the sides of the bowl.

 Step 10: Continue mixing on medium for about 30 seconds total.

 Step 11: Fill cupcake cups 2/3 of the way full.

Step 12: Put in oven on middle shelf.

Step 13: Set timer for 19 minutes.

Step 14 portion out 1/4 cup of icing and put into a plastic bag.  Press out air.




Step 15: Put 1/4 cup icing into a bowl.

Step 16: Tint the icing with yellow and green food coloring to make light green.




Step 17: Test cupcakes for doneness by inserting a tester into the center.  They are done when the toothpick comes out clean.

Step 18: Remove done cupcakes from the oven.

Step 19: Set aside to cool.

Step 20: Pour 1 cup of cornflakes into a bowl.

Step 21:Heat icing in microwave until it's the consistency of lightly whipped cream and pour over cornflakes.

Step 22: Stir to coat the cornflakes in frosting.

Step 23: Spread out onto wax paper to dry.


Step 24: Trace pattern for turkey skin from book.

Step 25: Heat caramels in microwave for a few seconds to soften.


Step 26: Roll caramels into a ball.

Step 27: Flatten the ball into a circle on pattern.

Step 28: Remove from paper and cut out semicircle for neck hole. Repeat 12 times.

Step 29: Scrape off salt from pretzel stix. (we couldn't find the wheat sticks the instructions called for.

Step 30: Wrap a softened caramel around the end of the stick to form the drumsticks. Repeat 24 times.


Step 31: Glob icing on top of the cupcakes.


Step 32: Cover the icing with the caramel skins.

Step 33: Cover icing that squirts out with Grape-nuts.

Step 34: Sprinkle Grape-nuts and icing with green nonpareils to make stuffing.

Step 35: Place legs on either side of the "stuffing", and press firmly into place.

Step 36: Ice the ends of the sticks to make them look more like bones.

Step 37: Push frosted cornflakes under edge of skin on top of the cup. Use icing if needed to help them stick.
